Am I covered to drive my car while towing a caravan?

Yes.

If your car’s insured with Prima, you’re covered to drive it whilst towing a single caravan or trailer.

Your caravan will have third party cover

While it’s being towed by your car, we’ll cover your caravan for third party damage. That means we’ll cover any damage your caravan causes to other people or other people’s property if you're involved in an accident.

We can’t cover any damage caused to your caravan though. If you want cover for this, you’ll need to look elsewhere for specialist caravan insurance.

You must follow UK trailer and towing regulations

Towing a caravan incorrectly or illegally will invalidate your car insurance, meaning you won’t be covered if you have an accident.

What’s more, if you’re caught by the police, you could face a fine, points on your licence or even a ban from driving. So always check before you tow.

For information about what you can legally tow, and how to do so safely, read the towing with a car guide from GOV.UK.

You must tell us if you plan to add a tow bar to your car

A modification is any change or addition to your car since it was first manufactured. This includes the addition of a tow bar to tow a caravan or trailer.

Like with all modifications, you must tell us if you plan to add a tow bar to your car.

Failing to tell us about your car's modifications could invalidate your insurance, meaning you won't be covered if you have an accident.

Regulations might be different abroad

Lots of caravan owners enjoy taking their caravan overseas.

Luckily with Prima, you’ll have the same level of cover as you do at home when driving abroad for up to 90 days in or between:

- Any country in the European Union (EU)

- Norway

- Switzerland

- Iceland

- Serbia

- Andorra

- Liechtenstein

- Bosnia and Herzegovina

This is provided that your car is registered and usually kept within the UK.

If you're planning to tow your caravan overseas though, it’s important that you check and follow the regulations of the specific country that you’re visiting. For instance, to tow it through most European countries from the UK, you’ll need to register your caravan.
