What’s breakdown cover and should I add it to my policy?

You don’t have to have breakdown cover by law. 

But over 7,000 cars break down on UK roads every year. So when you buy car insurance with us, we give you the option to add on RAC breakdown cover. 

Choose from four levels of cover:

1. Roadside

This plan includes:

• Unlimited call-outs and roadside labour for breakdowns over a ¼ mile from home
• Towing to a safe place or up to 10 miles if we can’t fix your car at the roadside
• Misfuel rescue if you fill up wrong 
• Taxi to anywhere within 20 miles if your car’s left at a garage

2. Roadside and Recovery 

This plan includes everything in Roadside, plus:

• Transport for you, your car and passengers to any UK destination if your car can’t be fixed at the roadside

3. Roadside, Recovery, At Home and Onward Travel 

This plan includes everything in Roadside and Recovery, plus:

• Unlimited home assistance if you break down within a ¼  mile of home
• Alternative transport or hotel stay if your car needs a longer repair

4. European Motoring Assistance

This plan includes everything in Roadside, Recovery, At Home and Onward Travel, plus:

• Up to 90 days’ EU cover
